Invited Industry Session: Opportunities
& Challenges for Nano-Enabled Smart Things

For the final afternoon of IEEE NANO 2018 (Thursday 26th July, 3 PM – 5 PM), we’re hosting a special Invited Industry session in Devere Hall, UCC on “Opportunities & Challenges for Nano-Enabled Smart Things”. The session will feature industry perspectives (non-confidential roadmaps, associated challenges and opportunities) from leading technical experts.

Dr. Michael Kane, Boston Scientific
“Nano Tech Challenges for the Implantable Medical Device Space”

Active implantable medical devices have revolutionized the treatment of numerous cardiovascular, neurological, and endocrine diseases. However no real estate is more precious than the internal spaces of a patient. As observed in the progression of pacemakers from Senning and Elmqvist’s groundbreaking 1958 implants, to today’s widely available devices; device complexity and capability have increased massively, while mass and size have diminished dramatically.  There remains huge demand for additional therapies, but always with the constraints of device volume, durability, and capability. This talk describes the unique requirements of active medical implants in general, and explores the applications and innovation areas that are begging to be served with new capabilities, greater efficiency, and smaller size.

Dr. Bert De Colvenaer, ECSEL
“A Public Private Partnership on Electronic Components and Systems: the ECSEL JU”

With the fierce competition at international level, the European Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) sector is under great pressure.  The ECSEL JU is a European Funding instrument, bringing all actors in the sector together to “Think Together”, “Work Together” and “Invest Together”.  But even more important, it builds and reinforces the European ECS Industrial Ecosystem.

Dr. Jason Lynch, Analog Devices
“Making the IoT Promise a Reality: Semiconductor Needs for the First Billion Nano-Enabled Smart Things”
